Project Overview & Mission

The Challenge:

Agricultural water reuse remains marginal across Europe and the Mediterranean – not because technologies are missing, but because systemic barriers prevent long-term adoption.

AYUMI is a direct response to fragmented governance, weak economic incentives, and persistent public concerns over emerging contaminants in treated wastewater like PFAS, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics.

By deploying modular, containerized treatment chains validated at TRL 7 – 8, co-designing dynamic tariff schemes, and anchoring replication pipelines into official basin strategies, AYUMI is shifting the paradigm from treating “wastewater” to managing a reliable, climate-proof circular asset.

Deploying standardized, modular treatment units across local treatment plants rather than building massive infrastructure – enabling fast, low-risk water reuse.

Long-Term Knowledge Production

Building a multi-season scientific evidence base tracking soil, crop, and groundwater health, while sharing open, real-time data through our digital platform.

Agricultural & Economic Resilience

Embedding reuse flows into basin models to simulate climate stress, establishing fair, true-cost water tariffs that credit environmental benefits like fertilizer reduction and carbon savings.

Trust, Safety Assurance & Social Innovation

Addressing public and farmer safety concerns through Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), Living Labs, transparent digital monitoring, and product quality certification.

Policy Integration & Public Commitment

Moving beyond stand-alone pilots by formally anchoring water reuse volumes into River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) and CAP eco-schemes.

AYUMI represents the mature convergence of over two decades of European R&I milestones.

Project Ô (2018–2022)

Developed the foundational modular treatment loops and space-scale planning toolkits, laying the groundwork for decentralized circular water management.

iMERMAID (2023–2026)

Innovative solutions for Mediterranean Ecosystem Remediation via Monitoring and decontamination from Chemical Pollution

The foundation

As part of its solutions iMERMAID developed advanced Pulsed Discharge Plasma (PDP) oxidation and digital monitoring frameworks to target persistent micropollutants and chemical threats.

The AYUMI Evolution

AYUMI scales these PDP treatment units to TRL 7 and embeds the digital monitoring components into the AYFlow platform for real-time agricultural water management.

SMARTWATER

Validated the continuous nutrient-tailoring sensors and low-impact membrane technologies that have now been seamlessly transferred to our agricultural nodes.

The Braunschweig Model

Integrates 70+ years of operational landscape reuse cycles, feeding our current Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and systemic compliance baselines.
